We are well aware through research studies that social isolation has a negative impact on brain, both physically and functionally. We also understand how difficult it could be for some of us to motivate ourselves to take on new stimulating activities while staying in isolation. Among other measures that you have taken, I would like to bring to your attention our research studies showing the effects of training on Double Decision and a few other exercises in BrainHQ on mood and control.

Please stay safe and keep active!

Kind regards,

Sleep apnea and Alzheimer’s
Sleep apnea causes a person to involuntarily stop breathing during sleep. Left untreated, it can lead to other health complications. In a recent discovery, Researchers have found there may be a link between Alzheimer’s and sleep apnea. While the results do not mean that those with this disorder will develop Alzheimer’s, the researchers found an association between sleep apnea and markers for Alzheimer’s. Find out more here.

Dopamine in the driver’s seat
Dopamine – it plays many roles in the brain, including reinforcement of behaviour, movement, and motivation. Dopamine is particularly interesting for neuroscientists because of its role in several neurodegenerative diseases, like Parkinson’s. Using MRI sensors, scientists have discovered more about how dopamine influences regions of the brain – both near and far – when released deep within the brain. Check out the full article here.

Chemotherapy or hormone therapy?
A landmark study of women going through breast cancer demonstrated that both women receiving hormone therapy and those receiving chemotherapy showed the same long-term cognitive decline. This suggests that we revisit terms such as “chemo-brain”, as chemotherapy is not the only source. Since 2018, the National Cancer Institute has chosen to use our very own BrainHQ to help patients with post-cancer cognitive decline. BrainHQ helps regardless of whether the decline is due to chemotherapy or hormone therapy. Learn more about the study here.

Kangaroo Care cuddles
There is no feeling more amazing than holding a newborn baby, delicate and fragile. Kangaroo Care is the skin-to-skin, chest-to-chest method of caring for a baby. It’s well known that Kangaroo Care can help early neurophysiological development, but a new study looked into the longer-term effects of the method and found positive cognitive and emotional results for both parent and child. Although the results are encouraging, remember to keep physical distancing for the time being! Read more here.

Melody for the brain
Did you know that jazz music can help us learn more about the brain? We often attribute creativity to “right-brain thinkers” and logic to “left-brain thinkers,” but a study involving jazz musicians at differing levels of proficiency sheds more light on how we use the brain’s hemispheres. The fascinating study shows that, in relatively inexperienced musicians, creativity is driven by the right hemisphere while highly experienced musicians rely primarily on their left hemisphere. Crank up that jazz, and learn more here!

Your Brain Holds the Key to Safer Driving!
Your brain is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment when you get behind the wheel of a car. As we age, our reaction times slow down and our field of vision decreases. This means our safety on the road is also reduced. By spending only 10 hours doing the engaging driving cognitive training program you can save your life and the lives of others on the road! Learn more here. Looking for a Driving Cognitive Training class? Click here.
